Giving My Students Hope About a College Education
I’m a high school teacher doubling as the school’s guidance counselor, in charge of helping students find financial assistance to attend college, and every year things get very busy after the first of the year. That’s when the seniors, and some enterprising juniors, start streaming into my office and classroom looking for information about getting into college. The last couple of years has really proved daunting for these students, however, due to the economic downturn and the worry about excessive student loan debt. The smart students want to know whether college is really a sound investment or if it’s simply a scam that will leave them in the poorhouse without significant job opportunities. Sometimes I don’t really know what to tell them. The employment situation is poor, and the job outsourcing hasn’t helped college graduates in any way, shape, or form.
